Common thyroid problems

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, hair fall, constipation and low mood. An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can cause weight loss, a racing heart, sweating, tremor and anxiety. Both are diagnosed with a simple blood test (TSH and thyroid hormones).

How Ayurveda can help

Ayurveda looks at the whole person: digestion and metabolism (Agni), body type, weight, sleep and stress. Care focuses on symptoms such as fatigue, weight, digestion and skin, and on diet and routine, while your thyroid levels continue to be managed by your doctor.

Important: do not stop or change thyroid tablets such as levothyroxine on your own. Thyroid hormone medicines need regular blood tests and dose adjustment by your doctor.

Everyday habits that help

  • Take your thyroid tablet as prescribed, usually on an empty stomach
  • Eat regular, freshly cooked, balanced meals
  • Stay active every day; it helps energy, weight and mood
  • Keep a regular sleep routine and manage stress
  • Get your thyroid tests done as often as your doctor advises
