AyurRemedy - Our Journey

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is formed from two words- Ayu and Veda means science explaining about life or as generally understood it is the Science of life. Ayurveda is the ancient system of medicine propagated in India 5,000 years (centuries) back. Knowledge of Ayurveda passed orally from Brahma to other series of Gods and later this science came out as a text by sages.

 Motto of Ayurveda

Swasthasya swasthya rakshanam– to preserve the health of a healthy person.

Athurasya vikara prashamanam-to alleviate the disease of a diseased person.

Core principles/concepts

  1. Panchamahabhuta— these are Prithvi, Jala, Agni, Vayu and Akasha.
  1. Tridosha— Vata, Pitta and Kapha formed from Panchamahabhuta.

All the living beings and non-living things, i.e., entire universe is composed of Panchamahabhuta. These anchamahabhuta constitute formation of Tridosha in body. Since all the components of body and universe is composed of these similar five elements, there is a balance formed in between living beings and the universe. When there is maintenance of this balance from time to time, season to season then only physical, mental and spiritual health is preserved. When this balance is lost, there is a loss of equilibrium in the normal state of doshas in body, leading to various kinds of diseases.

  1. Prakriti –Each individual owns his individuality based on the predominance of dosha during his birth. This predominant dosha forms Prakriti and the person can have Vata, Pitta or Kapha prakriti. Accordingly the characters of these doshas will be dominated in his body and mind. Hence each individual needs a customized routine for maintaining equilibrium of doshas.
  2. Chikitsa – divided into Shodhana and Shamanae. purificatory and palliative therapy respectively.
  1. Panchakarma therapy — (The shodhana therapy) includes procedures that eradicate the vitiated humors from the body. e.g.vamana(emesis), virechana (purgation), vasti (enema), nasya (nasal errhines).
  1. Shamana  –The shamana procedure comprises techniques that pacify the doshas or bring them back to normalcy e.g. deepana (carminative), pachana(digestive), upavasa(fasting) and other classical procedures like sudation with medicated powder or medicated leaves, powder massage or udwarthana shirodhara
